UNHCR supports Hellenic Rescue Team Chios by donating fuel for rescue vessels

Date: 10/11/2016
UNHCR supports Hellenic Rescue Team Chios by donating fuel for rescue vessels

The UNHCR, positively responding to the Hellenic Rescue Team’s (HRT) request, decided to support the station of the Hellenic Rescue Team in Chios with a donation of 1.000 euro. This amount of money will be used for fuel, which is necessary for the HRT Chios rescue vessels.
UNHCR quoted that is happy to support and recognize the high value work of Hellenic Rescue Team and that as a recognition HRT has been awarded with the Nansen Refugee Award (http://www.unhcr.org/news/stories/2016/9/57bc12e37/heeding-cries-help-lands-hellenic-rescue-team-2016-nansen-award.html).

With this donation, the HRT rescue boats in Chios, “IRINI” and “ATHINA”, will be in a position to respond immediately to every distress call received from Chios Coastguard and to support Search and Rescue operations in the Aegean Sea, saving people who are in danger. The station of the Hellenic Rescue Team in Chios initiated its action in June 2016, with the support of the Dutch sea rescue organization, KNRM, and right now it is staffed by 25 trained rescuers and coxswains, who have participated in more than ten operations at sea.

The station operates two fully equipped rescue boats and uses all the necessary rescue equipment.

HRT thanks the UNHCR!
