Lions Norway recently supported financially the work of the Hellenic Rescue Team and, specifically, HRT’s branches in Lesvos, Kos, Corfu (Kerkyra) and Magnisia, in order to enhance their operational and training activity and, especially, their search and rescue work at sea.
This donation was offered, thanks to the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue RS, which, along with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, actively and constantly Hellenic Rescue Team since 2015, by donating six rescue boats, equipment, training courses, fuel for the vessels and financial support for the administrative development of the organization.
Mr Nils Ørum, Lion’s Norway representative, with Ms Vivi Lundgren Schumann, RS’s head of international projects visited HRT Headquarters in Thessaloniki, where they met with the HRT board of trustees and a presentation was hold about HRT’s work during the refugee crisis and, also, about its cooperation with RS. Mr Ørum also visited HRT's rescue station in the Nautical Club of Thessaloniki, where he had the chance to have a small tour with HRT's rescue boat.
The donated money from Lion’s Norway were offered to the above branches, because they are all in need of rescue equipment which is necessary for sea rescue, urban search and rescue, but, also, for first aid provision. HRT Kos and HRT Lesvos supported the Greek authorities work when big earthquakes hit Kos in July and Lesvos in June and they also participated in hundreds of rescue missions at sea during the refugee crisis in Greece. Rescue stations in Magnisia and Corfu are two of the most active HRT stations in Greece and they are now developing their rescue work at sea. This resulted in them receiving two of the four new rescue vessels that were donated to Hellenic Rescue Team from RS and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Hellenic Rescue Team warmly thanks Lions Norway for their generous donation!
