The purpose of the Research, Technology and Telecommunication department is to advise and manage issues relating to telecommunications, information technology, electronics, as well as the introduction of new technologies in the standard operating procedures. It is also dealing with the design and development of innovations and the optimization of the existing electronic and IT systems.
The activities of the department include, among other things, the creation and development of pioneering and innovative technological products and services, as well as the design and management of the nationwide radio network of HRT, to cover remote communications needs, ensuring up to date, high quality communication. Meanwhile, the department takes care of the development of software and web applications, as well as the management of the information systems, and deals with the statistical analysis and data documentation.
Some of the most significant points in the course of the department so far are:

- Portable standalone telecommunication system in the VHF / UHF
- Repeaters and transponders nationwide
- Miniature cameras (micro cameras) for searching underneath ruins
- Point to point microwave radio links
- Remote control electrical charges
- Portable Voice and Data telecommunications system in HF / VHF / UHF
- Unified data base for the human resources and the technical equipment of HRT
An important milestone in the history of the department was the development of a fully mobile telecommunications operation center named "Hermes", which was equipped with the sponsorship of "Cosmote", a vehicle that contributes to all search and rescue operations of HRT.
Finally, in the recent years, Hellenic Rescue Team participates in European research projects, aiming at the utilization and / or development of new (or existing) technologies and processes that would be helpful in dealing with emergencies.
