According to the organisational chart of the Hellenic Rescue Team, the Operations Directorate is the competent body for the coordination of Search and Rescue operations.
The Operations Directorate is staffed by the Head of operations and four main officers. At a regional level the respective role of coordination is undertaken by local operations coordinators, who fall under the Operation Management. Its role is to organise and coordinate all Search & Rescue, and humanitarian aid within and outside the borders and wherever the Hellenic Rescue Team takes action.
The Operations Directorate was established in May 2002. Its officers have participated in training courses organized by the United Nations in operation management and international cooperations. The Operation Management also functions as an operational link between the HRT and other organisations (Civil Protection Authorities, Fire Brigade, Air Force, UN, EU, etc.).
Twice a year the Operations Directorate organises and conducts training courses about telecommunications, in which state authorities also participate. Furthermore, it hosts seminars for all HRT members concerning emergency Search and Rescue deployments abroad.
To achieve its goals, the Operations Directorate uses electronic and telecommunications equipment, as well as specialised computer applications. It operates four mobile telecommunication centres named "ERMIS", which are equipped with various types of telecommunication and other devices. It is also the Operations Directorate's responsibility to operate the specialized radionetwork of HRT.
