The threat of mass casualty incidents or medical surges to healthcare systems has always been present. Preparing essential parts of the healthcare system such as hospitals and their partners to prevent, respond, and rapidly recover from these threats is critical for protecting and securing the entire health infrastructure.

Incidents such as the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, the Fukushima tsunami and even the very recent hurricane Sandy that hit the US east coast and New York highlighted the importance of preparedness for hospitals, and healthcare systems in general, against potential threats and their consequences in the community. We should also note that these threats, manmade or natural, will be added to the considerable multiple challenges faced by trauma centres operating in hospitals and healthcare systems on a daily basis.

The COncORDE project will develop a Decision Support System (DSS) to tackle these challenges and improve preparedness and interoperability of medical services during an emergency situation.

The COncORDE proposal serves a dual role:

  • 1. As a security research project aiming at developing methodologies, models and processes towards wider standardisation in a range of problems of the healthcare system’s response to large-scale emergency situations
  • 2. As a technology research project aiming at developing a platform of ICT tools that will make the best use of existing and emerging technologies for healthcare emergency management

The COncORDE project is an EU-funded project from the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme FP7-SEC-2013-1 under grant agreement no. 607814. The COncORDE project’s total grant is 3,3 million Euros. The project runs for the period of 36 months, ending in April 2017.
